There is a world of information available on blackjack strategy. While one could spend a lifetime becoming a scholar on the game of blackjack, it is important first to understand the basic strategy of blackjack. Here are some basic tips on playing blackjack for the beginning player.
When to always take a hit
When you are holding a hand valued eight or less, you should always hit until it no longer makes sense to do so. Once you have reached that point, stand.
When to always double down
When holding a ten or eleven, you should always double down unless the dealer’s exposed card is a 10 or ace. In this event, simply hit.
When you should usually hit
When you have a hand value of nine you should typically hit, although if the dealer is showing a 3-6 as their exposed card you can double down profitably in most situations.
When to Stand
When your hand is a value of 12-16, you should stand in most situations. If the dealer’s up card is higher than a seven, you are best served taking a hit.
When you have 17 or higher, always stand, as the odds are not sufficient to draw regardless of the dealer’s up card.
When to Buy Insurance
You should never buy insurance. Insurance is a proposition that has a negative expectation. Best-case scenario, you break even. The odds of the dealer having blackjack are less than the amount the insurance pays. As a result, never buy insurance.
Once you learn basic blackjack strategy, you will be better able to begin your blackjack session with a basic working knowledge and will be on your way to playing blackjack profitably. Keep in mind, that while you have learned the basics, blackjack is a complex game, which requires deeper understanding in order to show a long-term profit.
